Clothing made from natural materials not grown with the use of harsh chemicals such as pesticides herbicides is often referred to as organic clothing. Conventional cotton is cultivated using about 16% pesticides. The world uses cotton for clothing and since cotton is the most grown material and most dependent on pesticides, cotton accounts for 25% of all pesticide use for all crops.

Farming families and scientists are realizing chemicals are causing ground and water contamination as well as farm water tables. Scientist are now understanding the impact chemicals have on the environment. It has also been proven that fish and wildlife contract some illnesses related to pesticide contamination.

As organic fashions become more popular, the price of cotton begins to rise and cotton farming increases to keep up with demand. Most organic clothing is sold in Europe for now, however, as more growers in the United States begin growing organic cotton more organic clothing will be sold in the United States. Organic clothing is sold with a certification stating that no pesticides were used while growing the cotton and no harsh chemicals were used in the dying process.

Hemp and bamboo are also used for clothing material. Hemp is a soft, durable fiber that is becoming more popular as recent developments in processing make it possible for the fibers to soften. Bamboo, a woody plant that can grow as much as 24 inches a day is know for its softness and ability to absorb moisture.
